At the turn of the twentieth century Marcel Duchamp said "I point and it is art." In his doodling on a postcard of the most famous European painting to date, The Mona Lisa, Duchamp turned this adored portrait into an androgynous girl-with a mustache and stated L.H.OO.Q- "She has a nice ass."
Man Ray and Duchamp collaborated in a portrait series were Duchamp turned himself into a his female alter-ego Rrose Selavy, (Eros c'est la vie).
In a post-post-modern society, or a sort of "post-truth society" we see this kind of social schizophrenia happen all the time. Take a glance at anyone's facebook page and you will see a "real" person's alter-ego online. In collaboration with wardrobe and make-up from the New Paltz theatre department, and photographer Nick Alciati, I have also created for myself a female alter-ego...Francesca Eros.
She premiers on October third in the Rotunda of the New Paltz Fine Arts Building in a series of large scale digital and silkscreen prints. It's a bit more drag than Duchamp but I'm okay with sexual ambiguity. Please spread the word on this collaborative project and event and friend her on facebook.
FRANCESCA EROS
